Primary Particulars

Primary Particulars

It is still a misunderstood part of our democratic election process. It ranks up there with the Electoral College and the Three Branches of our government of which people seem to be increasingly less knowledgeable.

This week will be the Primaries. March 3 is the election day for each primary. There are two (2) parties: Republican and Democrat. The primary is the opportunity for each party to decide who they will put up to run in the general election. It will not decide who will be president, only who will run on the Democrat ticket and on the Republican ticket. It is a preliminary election before the big election.

Each party will have a meeting or convention to approve and promote the winner. The separate parties have their own rules on how the candidate is chosen, especially if there is a tie or issue with the front runner. Obviously, the incumbent (current elected official) usually gets the nod and most of the votes. There are two others on the Republican ballot besides Trump this year, at least on the Arkansas ballot.
