The Widow of Th e South

CalCo museum has added the book The Widow of Th e South to it’s research Library. Published in 2005 author Robert Hicks wrote the novel as a fictional history story. He undertook the project at the urging of noted Civil War historian Shelby Foote. The story is set at Carnton, an antebellum mansion (still standing) that was used as a hospital for the wounded and dying from the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee, November 1864. The central character is Carrie McGavock (actual person), mistress of the home who also helped care for the wounded and dying.
