Dr. Wilson

David Franklin “Frank” Wilson was born September 9, 1861. In later years, Frank worked for the Harrells of Summerville for $4.00/month to support his widowed mother and family. At night after the work was done, Frank, James, Beulah, and an unnamed little Black boy would gather around the dining table where Sallie Ricks, Elizabeth Harrell’s daughter, would teach them “the three Rs.”

HISTORY MINUTE

Victor C. Kays was born in Illinois in 1882. Through his efforts, the small agricultural school in Jonesboro would grow to become one of the most important universities in Arkansas and across the South. Kays would become the man who would build Arkansas State University.

The Burqa is Back in Afghanistan

Somewhere I have an Afghan burqa, a very uncomfortable garment designed to cover a woman, totally obscuring her from the outside world. It is from Kabul, Afghanistan, and the days of the early Taliban circa 2001. It was sent to me by one of my reports, LTC Rick Hosey. He accompanied our 377th TSC commander MG David Kratzer to Kabul, Afghanistan to assist formation a new Afghan civil government under Hamid Karzai in 2002. Ricky also purchased an 1860’s British Enfield rifle still in use by the mujahidin. That weapon, left in Afghanistan by British troops in the 1860’s is exhibited in the CalCo museum Civil War display. Wish I could get back over and pick up maybe an abandoned U.S. tank or helicopter for the museum. Perhaps the Taliban could donate a U.S. rifle, but I see they are using them.
