Calhoun County Becomes Purple Heart County

On Monday, Calhoun County was recognized as a Purple Heart County by the Quorum Court of Calhoun County. Although it is still being investigated by the Veterans Affairs of Calhoun County, Perry Williams is the only living Purple Heart recipient in Calhoun County.

Williams received the Purple Heart in May of 1970 when he was deployed in South Vietnam. His group was ambushed and he received shrapnel wounds from the attack. Williams was part of the 25th Infantry in the 65th Combat Engineering Battalion.

Jimmy Lewis, chapter commander of Chapter 431 in Little Rock of the Arkansas Military Order of the Purple Heart, was present at the Calhoun County Quorum Court meeting to present Calhoun County with a plaque commemorating Williams’ service and receiving the Purple Heart.
