Hogskin County Population Increases by 17

We normally don’t go hog wild over the birth of a few piglets. It is not uncommon for sows to give birth to 6-8, or even 12. According to Jaret Rushing, Calhoun County’s Agricultural Agent, a normal litter can be on average between 6-8, however, he has seen litters of double digits before, upwards of 15+. Rushing said he talked to a county agent in Clark County (who has raised commercial swine) and she said that she had a York crossbreed once that birthed 20 piglets. Several years later, she had a Hamp cross that birthed 16.

Daisy (pictured at left) had reason to celebrate last week when she gave birth to seventeen cute little piglets. Seventeen may not sound so impressive against a world record of 27 (according to a simple search on Google by another sow named Daisy) but to Daisy it’s a big deal. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Stacy Johnson, also, very proud along with the boar, Blue, pictured right.
