Johnston Recalls MLK Assassination

Former Hampton High School principal, Glenn Johnston was in Memphis the day Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Johnston said he was in Memphis with other students from Hampton High School for a Student Council Concention that was held in West Memphis. He was a junior at the time.

“We were going to our meetings and we had a dance that night [April 4],” said Johnston, “and we were going long and all of a sudden they shut it down a little early and said ‘We need you to go back to the hotel rooms.’”

Johnston said they were not told what had happened. As they were leaving, they saw police everywhere and still had no idea.
