In order to attend the Quorum Court meeting your temperature was taken and you signed in. Upon entering the courtroom, it was noted that everyone was spread out to distance themselves from each other, abiding by the Health Department guidelines. The meeting opened as usual with prayer including a plea for this virus to subside.
With a grant received from the county, new bleachers were erected at the Hogskin Rodeo Arena.
As the teachers gathered in the back of the Elementary Building last Thursday, you could hear a lot of laughter and see smiles from everyone so glad to see each other. We are a family and have missed each other.
In late March, the library became one of 63 libraries across the country to receive a $2,000 grant to further Census 2020 programming to help ensure a more accurate count of US residents. The grant money was used to purchase 3 laptop computers, a desktop computer, and an iPad to be used to assist patrons with inputting Census data at the library.

Driving around Hampton, you may start to notice teddy bears out in people’s yards or windows. This is what is now known as a “bear hunt.” Other cities throughout the country are joining together for this “hunt.” A Hampton resident, Candy Calloway, started this trend after seeing it online in Little Rock. It gives kids in the community an opportunity to get out of the house without leaving the vehicle. You drive around neighborhoods and search for teddy bears in people’s houses.
This week is National Library Week! I look forward to this week every year, because it is when the American Library Association releases the annual State of America’s Libraries report. This report is full of statistics about how Americans are using their public, school, and academic libraries and how those libraries are engaging with and helping their communities. It also includes the yearly list of the Top Ten Most Challenged Books along with data about book challenges and banning across the country. The 2020 report came out on Monday, and was full of fascinating pieces of information. According to a recent Gallup poll, library visits are “the most common cultural activity Americans engage in by far,” with adults reporting an average of 10.5 trips to the library per year - more than trips to the movies, zoos, and national parks. Adults age 18-29 visit the library more than any other group, and take advantage of services like free WiFi, activities for children, and use of technology.
