Road Repair is a primary topic for both and water supply for residents is up for discussion
Calhoun Quorum Court met in a special called session Friday morning to pass and ordinance (see page 6) in order to write a check for construction on the county water project. The county grant money has not been received the some of the money to pay for the complete project. The money is being appropriated from American Rescue Plan funds.
On the agenda was a request by Judge Nutt to consider putting on the ballot a $.01 sales tax for roads. The requests comes as a result of increasing cost for road repair and maintenance. The Judge thought it would bring in about $800,000 a year.
Judge Nutt mentioned several roads needing work and stated that CR 205 up north was the worst. Some of the other roads also needed constant repair, largely due to the increased truck traffic.
The suggestion in the packet presented was for an election this November, which would be a special election. The Clerk suggested waiting until the March primary election as the cost for a special election is expensive. Judge Nutt stated, 'If we could have a special election, the chances of it passing is better.'
The Quorum Court will continue the discussion at the next regular meeting, August 25.
HamptonCityCouncil approved a resolution for the Recreation Board to apply for a matching $15,00 grant for relocating the batting cages and building a covered one. The relocation will then allow for the T-ball field to be relocated where the current batting cage is located.
As a result of changes in an Arkansas law concerning ATVs on streets and roads the council is looking at proposing an ordinance for the city dealing with use of ATVs within the city. A draft was presented and further discussion after members talk with constituents, will resume at the next meeting.
Judy Southall asked the city to consider a grant from the USDA to add her house and three other neighbors to connect to city water. She asked the county to figure out how they could provide water to these houses. The property is closer to city water than county water. More investigation will be done as to availability of grants and resume conversation at the next meeting.
Comments from council members include residents blowing deep grass onto the road, rough roads, and a possible sighting of a horse within the city limits.
The next regular meeting for the City Council will be September 8.
