2025-26 School Year Starts Strong

2025-26 School Year Starts Strong
Alyssa Howard

The year started a few weeks ago ahead of most of the other schools around and the number of students is slightly up form last year.

The Elementary has a total enrollment of 246 and with Preschool a total of 296. The High School has a total of 243 making Hampton School District total enrollment 539.

Superintendent Matt Scarbrough was pleased with the first few weeks of school as he reported to the school board on August 19. He also reported that the school was in sound financial position and was able to do several infrastructure improvements that were needed.

Scarbrough talked about some new legislation from the state. One was the retention of 3rd graders if they were not on the reading level determined by the state testing. Only a handful would have been affected per the last testing period. The school has mitigation already in place to help all students become proficient in reading.

During board meetings, a time for public comment is required which gives opportunity for comments for any to present for a limited to alloted. This week Trinity Smith, a senior, had comments about the cheer squad and the coaching. Though no further action or discussion was made, Trinity presented her case in a professional and timely manner.

There was much discussion on the student body's input on Homecoming changes. Primarily, on how the homecoming court is chosen. The ideas from the student body hoped to inspire more school spirit and participation in the Homecoming activities.

The next public meeting by the school board will be Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.
