Fifty-eight years ago, the graduating class of 1967 left Hampton High School just shy of one graduate. For the next almost six decades it would remain that way until December 19, 2025. Sergeant Jon A. Smith was welcomed back to Hampton for an honorary graduation ceremony. Sergeant Smith was drafted into Vietnam his senior year of high school and remained in the Army until 1992. During his time in the service he was awarded numerous medals for his hard work and determination. Sergeant Smith is decorated with the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star, two Overseas Service Bars, and the NCO Professional Development Ribbon (Advanced Level).
Along with him to celebrate his graduation were his children Melinda Smith, Melissa Smith-Galloway, and Jonathan Smith, brothers David Smith and Johnny Smith, sister Mary 'Stick' Smith, granddaughter Trinity Smith, cousins and friends Rev. Dr. Robert Cook Sr, Rev. Dr. Chester Thompson Jr, and Gus McCrae.
Now that Sergeant Smith has received his diploma from Hampton High School he plans on enrolling in college courses! Thank you for your service and once a bulldog, always a bulldog.
