For years, maybe decades, the Union, as it is referred to, meaning the United States of America, has been more of a division than union. I'm not naive to the fact that we will disagree on not just a few ideas or policies but I would like to see the part that unites and makes us a Union or United.
250 years ago the nation, the people, though even then at odds as to the method, decided that Freedom was enough to unite and defend and even die for. It wasn't perfect and it was messy but it was a start toward freedom, specifically from governmental control and oppression.
When there were, at times, things that hindered freedom, it was made right. The constitution and the establishment of States instead of a single state gave the opportunity for differences of ideas and ways of governing within certain boundaries always maintaining the ideal of freedom of the people. Each generation must study and understand history and how we got here and the sacrifices individuals made to protect even those with whom they disagree.
There is so much to be thankful for because we live in the USA and not under an oppressive monarchy or dictatorship we defeated.
