TALES FROM THE SHIRE

Old Shoes and New Jeans

A pair of red slide sandals with a cute flag emblem on them are showing signs of wear. The lining at my little toe has worn through and the outside of the heel has no sign of tread. They have been my summer faves and in winter I can adjust the single band so that I can wear socks.

I am sad because they fit perfectly and have a good arch placement for my hard to fit foot — skinny heel, high instep, wide from the arch to the toe. When I find a shoe that fits really well, I buy them and sometimes ask what all colors they come in. I didn’t with these and regret it. Although I did buy them in Texas, I hoped the chain store I bought them from would still carry them in Arkansas.

I guess they change inventory every so often. I got them around the time one of my nephew’s was born. His graduation announcement came in the mail last week.

I had the same problem with finding some jeans I liked. For mission week, I went to a well known donation type store to get some cheap work jeans. Said store did not have dressing rooms open yet, so I had to estimate fit by seeing if half the waist would go from belly button to backbone.

Numbers and sizes are not to be trusted on jeans, and I found the belly button to backbone couldn’t either. That trick does not take into account the backside, so when I got home I had a pair that refused to pull up over the backside enough, and two pair that fit. One pair that fit was two inches too short, but I could tuck them into boots in winter and cuff them into capris in summer. Another pair was too long, but I could do the boot or cuff options. Otherwise, they fit wonderfully loose, and they stretched! I thought I might get a new pair, maybe even a size smaller.
