Advertisers Depend on Readers

There is one in every community, if this was 1950. This is 2022 and the waning of local newspapers is tolling all across the country. At first, it's the very small daily newspapers that go to 3-5 days a week. The weekly newspapers have already been cutting back on pages and paid content. The mega papers have gone digital, saving on print costs. So, why this decline and interest in the newspaper? And why did I buy the South Arkansas Sun with the declining newspaper industry?

Reconstruction was a time of chaos, violence, corruption, and confusion in Arkansas. Politicians plotted against each other while lynchings and assassinations bloodied the landscape. In the midst of the intrigue, one man rose from relative obscurity in the legislature to catapult himself into the governor’s office, Ozro Hadley.

It was the end of the Civil War, and the men in uniform hoped the danger was over and they could fi nally resume their lives. But in an instant, a cruel twist of fate forever ended those hopes for hundreds of people. The explosion of the steamship Sultana in 1865 was the worst maritime disaster in American History, a disaster that took the souls of hundreds on the Mississippi River between Arkansas and Tennessee. It is a story still remembered with sadness and dread to this day.

* On July 3, 1863, the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's last attempt at breaking the Union line ends in disastrous failure, bringing the most decisive battle of the American Civil War to an end. Exhausted, both armies held their positions until the night of July 4, when Lee withdrew.
