Fire Ant Control….There’s Still Time!

One of the more consistent calls I get on a yearly basis is “How do I control fire ants in my yard/pasture/field/etc.?” The answer might discourage you but there is no way to do a complete control. A fellow agent once told me (in regards to fire ants) “Boy, you have to find a level of aggravation you’re willing to put up with.” This seemed so vague at the time but since I’ve been doing demonstrations for 13 years, that statement could not have been more spot-on!

Control is a term used to describe eradication to most. However, control could be population thinning, removal of an unwanted pests by termination/relocation, and even complete population control in some instances. Where fire ants are concerned, we have to find the level of population that we can tolerate. Luckily, there are several good pesticides on the market that show promise of control.
