Deaconess Flossie Tatum
Flossie attended school in Harrell, Arkansas, and later, she attended school in Thornton, Arkansas.
At the age of 12 years old, Flossie united with Harrell First Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Turner in 1952. She remained a faithful servant until her health failed. She worked and served faithfully at her beloved Harrell First Baptist Church, as she stated in her important notes left behind, ' I love my Church'. Flossie served as Church Clerk for 32 years (1983-2015), she was a Sunday School Teacher (youth and later woman adult classes), youth director, chairperson of the Building Fund, former Vice President of the Mission Auxiliary. She also served as secretary of the Finance Committee. Flossie was a knowledgeable, faithful, dedicated, and committed Deaconess.
Flossie was instrumental in successfully organizing the Black Awareness Group (BAG) along with her good friend Lillie Randall. Flossie served as the very first Vice President of the group. She served faithfully for many years. She served on the United Community Resource Council (UCRC) for years. Flossie was a very valuable member of the J.K. Edwards Bible lnstitute's 'Handfuls of Purpose' Ministry Food Team.
Flossie was a very industrious woman. Work did not intimidate her in any way, shape, or form, or
fashion. She was employed at the Hampton School District for fifty years as a Director of Custodial Services. Flossie was well respected by the entire administration, School Board, Faculty staff, as well as students and parents. This Godly Woman knew how to treat others she knew how to be kind, loving, and forgiving. She has left an indelible mark on her church, her community, and on all who knew her. She has left a legacy that her family can be proud of for generations to come.
Flossie was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Rev. Howard Tatum September 21, 1957, and to this union they raised a beautiful, loving family. Julie, Thomas, John Howard, Janice, and Frances.
Three children, Thomas, John Howard, and Janice preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death is five siblings Bertha Lee Ferguson, Linda Cox, Brenda Moore, Curtis Childs, and Kenneth Golden.
Flossie leaves to cherish her fond memories two daughters, Frances Crawford and Julia Hampton, two sisters Eula Childs and Eloise (Robert) Jones. She also leaves nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, friends, and a special friend, Lillie Randall.
