County Agent Receives Forestry Award

Jaret Rushing, Staff Chair of Calhoun County, was recently awarded the Technology Transfer Award from the Ouachita Society of American Foresters for his work in forestry and wildlife promotion through social media. Jaret has posted over 80 posts in 2020/21 specifically highlighting attributes of forestry and wildlife management including: general tree ID, wildlife species ID, vegetation management, cultivation, reptile encounter safety tips, feral hog control, forest “edibles”, and white-tailed deer antler scoring and aging among many others. It took longer to read the resolutions and ordinances than it did to meet. It was incentive pay and budget time. Besides the two ordinances, the court accepted the resignation of the County Coroner and adopted for approval the new district lines as a result of the 2020 census.

So, You Want To Start Farming

It is estimated that about 2 million taxpayers include a schedule F in their tax return but only about 300,000 of them report a livable income from farming. 1.7 million farms are at or near a loss. Why would so many people want to report a farm that was losing money? Actually, the question should be, why do so many people farm when it produces no significant income?
