“Within my lifetime, we have gone from cranking telephones to interplanetary communications,” John Wesley Snyder marveled at his own life. His own life was a marvel, moving from delivering the Jonesboro Evening Sun as a youngster to eventually serving in the cabinet of President Harry S. Truman.

We celebrate the birth of our country on July 4th. We celebrate its freedom from the rule of England’s King. It is the first step toward freedom for all. It was not perfect in all ways but sought to find freedom and equality for all.

Baseball’s Dizzy Dean became an unforgettable personality in a game known for unforgettable personalities. Born Jay Hanna Dean in Lucas in western Arkansas’s Logan County in 1910, his baseball talents became obvious very early.

Robert Crittenden was once a giant in Arkansas politics. As the first territorial secretary, he laid the foundations for the beginnings of Arkansas government and the establishment of Little Rock as the capital. But he would see all of his gains slip away and die at a young age.
